Summertime Jewelry Care

Jewelry is a precious treasure we should always take care of. Summertime brings in a new environment that we should be aware of. Remember that jewelry is an investment that we should protect for the future.

Summertime jewelry care-Emerald Aurora

The biggest issue of summer jewelry damage is chlorine. Many pools have this chemical additive to keep the water safe for swimmers, but unfortunately for your jewelry, it causes significant damage and discoloration to precious metals. Precious gemstones like diamonds can also be affected – chlorine can remove the finish and polish, resulting in a dull and dark appearance.

Chemical Buildup

Buildup from bug spray and sunscreen can quickly transform your sparkling jewelry into dull and dim pieces. If this has happened to you, don’t fret! We recommend a professional cleaning to shine, polish, and perfect.

If you find yourself in need of frequent cleanings from buildup over the summer, do your jewelry a favor and simply take it off when you know you’ll be wearing bug spray or sunscreen.

Quick Tips

  1. No chlorine or salt water! Remove all jewelry before going into a hot tub or swimming pool or salt water. Chlorine or salt water can damage and discolor metals such as gold and platinum and can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones.
  2. Don't wear jewelry when applying sunscreen, lotions, and when in the shower. These products cause a film to form on your jewelry, making it appear dull and dingy.
  3. Wipe jewelry after wearing. Use a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth to wipe jewelry after wearing to remove any summer lotions. This will enhance the jewelry’s luster and will ensure that it is clean before storage.
  4. Store your jewelry in a clean, dry place.
  5. Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case, or in a box with compartments and dividers to prevent pieces from scratching each other.
